Aquests dies és notícia la recent seqüenciació del DNA mitocondrial d'un ós polar (Ursus maritimus). La notícia no tindria tanta repercussió si no fos pel fet que el DNA es va extreure d'una mandíbula parcialment fossilitzada trobada a Noruega al 2004 i d'una antiguitat de 110.000–130.000 anys.
